  Growing up JW

  growing up a jw, i was well aware that a lot of people didn't care for my religion, especially growing up in a strong catholic community in the 60's.

  my being a jw wasn't something i advertised, especially in my school days.

  but that feeling was always there, that i was someone, who because of my religion, was disliked, even hated.. i sit here thinking what it would have been like to have grown up without those feelings.

  I also felt despised (probably my own perception) and not liked. Kids did make fun of me for having to leave the classroom for holidays, etc. As a result, I think it created a thick skin and the "dare to be different" attitude. I homeschool my kids and even though this is a wonderful way learn and grow, it sometimes is seen as weird or bucking the system by a few people. Due to my thick skin, I really don't care what people think. I have also taught my girls that living and thinking outside the box and being different in this way is a good thing.

  Life as a JW kid was certainly not fun, but it did produce this character in me (among other things!).

  The Day all Jehovah`s Witness`s are put into Concentration Camps!

  when i was a kid,kingdom halls still had windows.thats a while ago..as a kid i was told in the last days,jehovah`s witness`s would be rounded up and be put into concentration camps..i was told,when the government came to take me away and seperate me from my parents,i should wear my warmest coat and boots.as i would have to fend for myself in the concentration camp..i was told never to give up my faith.even if they tied my parents to a stake and was foced to light the fire that would burn them alive.....jehovah`s witness`s are the "happiest people on earth!

  I freaked out, running back to my parents in stark terror. Mom used to relate this experience with a snicker.

  Real flippin' funny, Mom.

  Oh my cow! That was so funny! Our KH in the 70s had block windows, there was light but we couldn't see in or out. As children, we were always told to be obedient to the nth degree because there might come a time when we would be told to run or hide and it would mean our lives to do it immediately and without question. Sheesh, what a load of controlling, fear inducing crap!

  I remember the Truth book too, but mostly the Great Teacher book. We read through it 7 times in a row. This fact was mentioned from the platform. Parents were trying to prove we were a model witness family I guess.

  JWD outage -- what if it were longer or worse, permanent?

  if its not up, like earlier today, it gets me to thinking, what if this were a permanent thing?

  what if jwd were actually shut down like our friend quotes site in 2006?

  I don't post here much either, but I'd like to say Happy New Year as well! I am also grateful for this forum, but especially for FreeMinds.org. Thanks Randy! New Year's resolution: Continue taking what I learn at these sites and educating anyone who will listen. In some crazy turn of events down the road somewhere, it just may save someone's children from the hell we born-ins had to endure.

  My first time ever going to a church service...

  i took a walk this morning and ended up going to the service at the church down the street .

  i have always been curious as to what it would be like .

  funny i was really scared someone from the hall would see me go in .

  Oh, I was sweating bullets the first time entering a church...imagine that after 18 years out! What brainwashing I had (I was born to 2nd gen. JWs and spent the first 18 years of my life in H--L). After each subsequent visit to various churches, it got easier. I finally attended a church 2 years ago that is much the same as the ones described above and more. I LOVE it! And my teens can't get enough! The strongest feeling I have with this new family is JOY--indescribable JOY! Hallelujah! And they love me.....

  The quickest, best way to have a Witness open their eyes to being a cult

  my sister was probably one of the most loyal witnesses out there.

  all her responses were pulled right from the watchtower thinking, "sorry you feel that way, but i believe jehovah's witnesses are god's people.

  " well in time we came to an agreement, "you do not bring up your negative thoughts on the religion, and i will not try to get you to come back to the religion.

  I don't think having someone take a break is at the top of the list for opening their eyes. My brother has been "on a break" for 20 some years and when I tried to talk to him about the truth about the "Truth" I've recently learned he went into total defensive mode and became very angry. I'm still reeling over it and learned a lesson. Now I'm looking for a way to subtly plant seeds of doubt in him. Someday things will make sense for him like they did for me.

  Thanks for the welcome. Our church really is cool. My kids love it, especially (and get this!) my teens! My 15-y-o daughter actually looks forward to going twice a week and talks about it to other people. She's the one that wanted to try the church in the first place and insisted we keep going! You can't ask for a whole lot more than that from your kids.
